Travel Gawker: I Want to go to…. Rio de Janeiro
Jess and I decided to start our travel gawker feature as a way to collect information on all the wonderful places we would like to explore in the future. We are both keen travelers and over the past year between us we have clocked up some air miles travelling to Greece, Rome, California and Mexico. Travelling to different countries, exploring and experiencing is one of my main passions in life. I have a huge love for the natural world so where ever possible I try to head somewhere that is famous for its wildlife and culture.
High on my list of places to visit is Rio de Janerio. With both the world cup being held there in 2014 and Olympics in 2016, I can’t help but feel this will be an extremely popular city over the coming years. The Rio de Janeiro carnival is actually on my bucket list of things to do, I can imagine it is awesome with non stop dancing, outrageous costumes and live music. That would be my perfect summer!

If I went to Rio de Janeiro I would visit…
The Corcovado, home to the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer and the Pao de Acucar or Sugar loaf Mountain. This figure is considered to be the largest art deco statue in the world and over looks Rio. Sugar Loaf mountain offers an amazing view of Christ the Redeemer as well as views of Rio.

The wildlife enthusiast in me would want to visit…
Ilha Grande an island located to the south of the city which has waters clear enough for snorkeling great chance to view sea turtles, Stingrays, dolphins. The Serra dos Órgãos National park is also situated about an hours drive outside of Rio de Janeiro, and would be well worth the drive in order to see this native forest.

I would buy…
Chachaca, otherwise known as Brazillian rum. It is a spirit made entirely from distilled sugar cane, sounds yummy!

It’s been many, many years since I visited Rio. I’d love to go again, although I’d be content to miss the tourists in February.
If you look at the first picture, of Cristo Redentor, my cousin used to live in the valley off the right hand of the statue. She’s since moved a bit further south, but still within the confines of Rio.
Good memories!
