DIY Mini Tipi + Video Tutorial!
Oh my gosh do we have a treat for you today! I have wanted to build a tipi in the garden for so long and we finally did it! And now we can show you how to make one too! I think tipis are such a lovely addition outside or inside the house and not to mention a festival wedding! How awesome would a couple of these be for the kids to play in? They would be fab for photo opportunities too! To make our mini tipi you will need:
5 7ft Poles (We used copper rods because that’s just what we found lying around my Dad’s builders yard but you could use bean poles or bamboo sticks or whatever you can get your hands on!) // Spray paint // String // 12ft x 9ft Dust sheet drop cloth // Decorations of your choice // 3 pegs // Needle // Thread //
STEP 1: Spray paint your poles in the colours of your choice! We decided to only spray half of the poles as that’s all we would see sticking out of the top of the tipi but it’s up to you how much you paint!
STEP 2: Leave your poles to dry completely.
STEP 3: Next, holding your poles together, take your string and start to wrap it around and in and out of all of the poles to secure them in place, you’ll want to do this about a foot from the top of the poles.
STEP 4: Start to separate out the base of your poles to form your tipi structure.
STEP 5: Take your dust sheet and wrap it around your newly formed structure.
STEP 6: Then peg your sheet in place!
STEP 7: Next get your needle and thread and sew a seam about half the length of the tipi, starting from the top to just above half way down (this will leave the opening for your door)
STEP 8: Finally decorate your tipi however you like! We popped a few cushions outside and used a tassel garland to hang around the top! Let your tipi decorating imagination run wild!
We also filmed this tutorial so if you find it easier to watch a video demonstration then you can below! You’ll also see we had an extra couple of little hands from my cousins Chloe & Liam and a set of paws from Mushu of course…

Hello, I loved this tutorial by the way, its super easy and clever. I was wondering though, what size are the poles you used and the length and width of the fabric?
Hi Sandra! Thanks for your kind comments, we are so glad you liked it! The poles were 6ft and the fabric was 12ft x 9ft. Hope that helps 🙂
