The Magical Moments Of Spring After A Long Cold Winter
Now I know the depths of winter are still ahead of us but today’s styled shoot was created around the idea of those first magical moments of spring straight out of a cold winter. You know what I’m talking about, the air is still crisp but things are warming up and the flowers are just starting to peer their heads out and blossom! It’s a celebration of new life that is in your garden in contrast to winters starkness, so if you’re already dreaming of those moments then today’s shoot is for you! Let me transport you into a warm orchard filled with soft pinks, lavender lilacs and pretty plum…
“Last year my husband and I moved to Des Moines, IA for medical school. Our first winter in Des Moines was the coldest winter they’ve had in over 15 years. As the ice and snow began to melt and the trees began to bud and blossom, I knew I wanted to create images that were warm and cheerful as we prepared for spring. I had heard about Water Works Park and the beautiful flowering crab apple trees, so I knew the shoot had to take place there. From there, everything else fell in to place. I wanted a blush dress that was elegant and soft and reminded me of spring. I met with Brenda of As You Wish Floral Design and together we decided on a larger floral crown with pinks and purples. What she created was more beautiful than I could have imagined. Here is what she said about her flower inspiration:
“I wanted the floral crown to reflect the feeling of spring after a long winter. A celebration of new life that is in your garden in contrast to winters starkness. Lavender and pink have long been the colors of spring so I chose pink peonies, lavender lilacs, soft pink ranunculus and wax flower along with textural greens from around my garden to keep the piece organic. The bouquet of wax flower was perfect to offset the fullness of the floral crown but not take attention away from it but be an accent. ”
Hope (our model) was someone I worked with during my day job. During a “get to know you” ice breaker she mentioned that she played the cello. Immediately a light bulb went off in my head and I had the idea to incorporate that into our photo shoot. As I talked with Hope about the photo shoot, she and I both felt that the cello needed a more dramatic look to go with it, which is where our second look came into play. We decided to go with a rich purple dress and darken her eye makeup which I think created the perfect look for the second part of our photo shoot.
The day of our photo shoot I was worried we were going to be rained out. We had heavy rain fall and thick black clouds all day long. I showed up to the location 20 minutes before our shoot and there was no sign of the rain letting up. Literally 2 minutes before we were scheduled to start shooting the clouds parted and the rain let up. It was a miracle. We ended up having beautiful light and the grass and trees were bright and vibrant. It was perfect. We seriously had a dream team of vendors and we all look forward to working together again.”
