DOMINICAN DREAMS: LA ROMANA TRAVEL GUIDE
Did I mention that I went to the Dominican Republic a couple of weeks ago? If you follow us on Instagram you would have seen tons of updates over there (seriously guys, I couldn’t stop sharing the colourful scenes of this trip!) But I really have been so excited to share my full guide with you! If you’re planning a trip here soon, thinking about it for your honeymoon or are simply dreaming up new places to visit in the future then be sure to pin this page to your travel board for future use! I’m going to be sharing places to visit, where we stayed, my favourite moments and what you should pack!
STAY…
We spent two weeks at Dreams La Romana and the place truly was gorgeous! It had literally everything you could ever want from an all inclusive resort, we were spoiled with 7 restaurants, 8 bars, a coffee shop, a spa, various amounts of swimming pools and a beautiful stretch of beach over looking the ocean. The resort in itself is absolutely huge which was one of my favourite things about it because no matter where you were it never felt crowded. My other favourite thing was that they had resident flamingos on site. Hell yes. Oh and they also served amazing fresh fruit every day from a boat on the beach so I was happily getting a daily fix of watermelon and pineapple!
VISITING SAONA ISLAND…
Saona Island was the first place we visited while we were there and it truly was beautiful! It’s a small island about a 40 minute boat trip away from La Romana where we explored the beach, had lunch and drank from fresh coconuts! They have a few people coming around selling you things made on the island and I bought the most beautiful ring! You could also buy coconut oil, cigars and plenty of other gorgeous jewellery! Afterwards, we went snorkelling and even saw some starfish!
LA ROMANA…
I was absolutely gutted that we didn’t get to explore La Romana properly, we did however get to drive through it one day and I managed to snap a few of my favourite scenes on the way through! One of my closest friends used to work on a cruise ship and she would stop here all the time and highly recommended it! There’s tons a cool bars, lovely restaurants and you can see the cruise ships coming into the harbour which is an awesome sight!
VISITING SANTO DOMINGO…
We spent a day in the capital of the Dominican and I have to say it was one of my favourite days!! I absolutely loved exploring this city! We visited Christopher Columbus’s old house, went inside the basilica, wandered the colourful streets and even visited a little chocolate factory where I bought some SUPER YUM chocolate tea! Anyone who knows me knows that I am obsessed with tea so combining that treat with chocolate was a major result for me! This particular trip we were on also stopped at a cenote on the way home which was a really nice touch, it’s always so nice to see some natural marvel’s while you’re in another country.
WHAT TO PACK…
I am notorious for over packing and not surprisingly I did it again this trip! Realistically as long as you have a few bathing suits, some sandals, a hat, a couple of light weight dresses and some comfortable walking shoes then you have everything you need! I’d also recommend taking some sort of cardigan or wrap with you if you’re planning on going to the basilica in Santo Domingo because they ask that you cover up. I didn’t have one and they gave me a shaw but I got the feeling it was better to have something with you! Obviously a beach bag is a must too and where would a girl be without a floral crown or two?!
NIGHTLIFE…
Admittedly we only went out one evening but never the less it was one hell of a night! We headed to the newly built CocoBongos as we’d been to the one in Cancun a few times and knew the show would be great! For those of you who don’t know Cocobongos, it’s like a theatre show/acrobatic show/ night club and it is EPIC! They have fantastic dancers recreating scenes from films such as Chicago, Moulin Rouge, Tron, Spiderman, Pirates of the Caribbean and impersonators for Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Queen and so many more! I would highly recommend it!
FINAL THOUGHTS…
A few more things to think about if you’re visiting the Dominican Republic soon, I would suggest taking some sort of insect repellent with you, bizarrely I got stung by wasps twice on the trip and a friend of ours had quite a few mosquito bites (even though James had none! I guess it depends on how tasty you are ha!), we used American dollars over there and never once had a problem using those everywhere! If you’re staying in this hotel make sure you take a trip to the spa! I literally had the best massage of my whole life there for $50 and I swear the woman worked miracles on my back! It was also so relaxing being able to use the rest of the spa facilities like the sauna and the jacuzzi! Obviously don’t drink the water out of the taps, stick to bottled and do your best to make the effort to speak a little spanish whenever you can! I just think that’s a polite thing to do even if it’s as small as saying ‘gracias’ and ‘hola’.
Woah! If you made it this far then I salute you! What are you waiting for? Go and pack that suitcase, there’s an exciting Dominican adventure waiting for you! xx
I am proud to see publications like this that show the beauty of my country. Thank you.
Love the photos. Major #DRlust now!
Them pink gladiator sandals are on point 😀
Just wondering what kind of transportation did you use, to get to Coco Bongo?
Hi! Love your blog and videos….I’m going to th DR next week and was wondering what kind of transportation you used from your resort to the towns and shows? Did your resort provide those resources? Also, did you use a GoPro for your video? Looove it! Thank you :))
Hi Rachel,
Yeah the resort we were staying in provided all of the transport for us which was really helpful 🙂 And it sure was a GoPro for the video 🙂 I hope you have a fantastic time in DR!
Best wishes
