DIY BACKYARD ZOOM WEDDING
Erin and Alex are two colour lovers who DIY’d their vibrant backyard wedding during COVID. Set by the pool in their parents’ backyard, this couple infused colour and fun into their micro wedding. All the florals were DIY’d by the bride, choosing hot pink peonies as her statement flower (which perfectly matched her heels!) Neither Erin or Alex are very fond of dancing, so they made a fun photobooth station stocked with props and a game table stacked with tons of their favourite board games to entertain their guests. In lieu of cake, Alex made a three tier Rice Krispy Treat cake, with a colourful Fruity Pebble layer in the middle. Their Kentucky Derby formal dress code made it more fun for the few, guests that attended, with everyone decked out in their hats and Sunday best (even their pup got a floral print bowtie!)
“We were looking for something budget friendly and had landed on my parents’ house before COVID hit. After COVID it still made sense to keep it there and just downsize the number of guests which turned out to be perfect!” Erin began.
“I DIY’d all of the flowers with wholesale flowers from Blooms by the Box, as well as our invites and thank you cards. The inspiration for the invites was something I had found on Pinterest. I loved that it wasn’t a normal invitation and it made you laughed. It all ends up in the trash afterwards so why not have a little fun?!”
“My husband made our cake! Neither of us are big cake people, but we love Rice Krispy Treats, so he made a 3-tiered rice Krispy treat cake with 1 layer being fruity pebbles (his favourite). We also DIY’d a corn hole board and giant Jenga about 2 weeks before the wedding. It was a real labour of love, but we got exactly what we wanted in the end. The inspiration for the Giant Jenga was from a set we saw at Target. I loved the idea of something colourful but didn’t love the price tag. The Corn Hole boards were something I found while googling ideas. I loved the design and knew it wouldn’t be too hard to accomplish in my parents’ garage.” Erin explained.
“Don’t be afraid of trying your hand at making your own bouquet or anything else for that matter. And don’t be afraid to go against the grain! I DIY’d a lot of my wedding and that made it even more special.”
“The planning was all me with a little help from my husband and mom. I had a general idea of what I wanted to do but obviously needed some help and a sounding board for how to achieve that. We started planning in January but as soon as COVID hit in March we virtually stopped. We kept going back and forth on whether we’d have the wedding and by the time we said ‘yes we’re doing this’ – it was May. We scrambled to finish everything that I had started and confirmed with all my vendors that they were still good to go. As organized as I am I didn’t do much organizing on paper for the wedding, everything was in my head which could have been disastrous but luckily everything turned out how we wanted it!” Erin told us.
“I was a complete ball of stress the week leading up to the wedding.” She continued.
“You know that dream that you missed a class all semester and you’re can’t graduate because of it? That was the wedding week for me. I was constantly panicked that I was forgetting something – maybe if I had written things down…” She laughed.
“In the end I don’t think there was anything that I had forgotten that was a big deal. We got married and that’s what matters.”
“I do wish we’d got a mic for those that were watching the wedding on Zoom. I didn’t even think about it until I attended a funeral about a month later and they had one. What a difference that made! Apart from that that there wasn’t anything else we would have changed. It was a perfect reflection of our personalities and our relationship, which is what it’s supposed to be right?!”
“We went with things that reflected our relationship and made us happy as a couple. Remember it’s just 1 day in all the years that you’ll be together.”
