PLAYFUL DESTINATION WEDDING INSPIRED BY MEXICAN TRADITION
Hola! For those of you that haven’t heard I am currently sunning myself on a beach in Mexico right now!!! So I am totally feeling the vibe of today’s fun and colourful Mexican wedding.
It was on a trip that Lo and Kate decided that Mexico would be their ideal place to get married and being avid travellers it only made sense that they plan a destination wedding, in order share their passion of travel with their closest family and friends.
I am so excited to share this with you today and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
I promptly fell in love with Lo the moment I met her and knew from the start that she was the one. Her zest for living life, contagious laugh and heart-melting smile are just a few of her many endearing qualities. When she popped the question, I was overwhelmed with excitement and we immediately started to discuss plans for our big day. Being avid travelers, it made perfect sense for us to plan a destination wedding and share our passion for traveling with family and friends.
We had fallen in love with Mexico while on a trip and instantly knew it was the place we wanted to get married. Inspired by playful Otomi embroidery, the traditional Mexican embroidery truly captured our imaginations and motivated the wedding’s design. Our outstanding wedding team incorporated every detail of our vision with the creative décor, abundant flowers and a flawless execution of the entire day, from start to finish. It was nothing short of pure magic. Our wedding was most definitely the biggest party we’ve ever thrown, and to us, will simply be the best day ever.

What is a Wedding inspired by Mexican Tradition?
A wedding inspired by Mexican tradition is a vibrant celebration rich with cultural heritage, colorful decorations, and joyous festivities. Rooted deeply in family values and religious customs, a traditional Mexican wedding seamlessly blends the old with the new, creating an unforgettable experience for the couple and their guests. For more ideas read this.
Pre-Wedding Traditions
Before the wedding day, many Mexican couples participate in a pre-wedding tradition known as “las arras,” where the groom gives the bride thirteen gold coins. These coins symbolize Jesus and his twelve apostles, representing the groom’s commitment to providing for his family. This ritual emphasizes the religious foundation and mutual support in marriage.
The Ceremony
The heart of a traditional Mexican wedding is the Catholic mass, often held in a grand, ornate church. The ceremony is steeped in symbolism, featuring rituals such as the “lazo” or wedding lasso—a large loop of rosary beads or a floral garland placed around the couple’s shoulders in a figure-eight. This symbolizes their eternal unity and commitment. Another poignant moment is the “velación,” where the bride and groom offer flowers to the Virgin Mary, seeking her blessings for a happy marriage.
Reception Festivities
Post-ceremony, the celebration continues with a lively reception, often outdoors. The atmosphere is electric, filled with mariachi music, traditional dances like “La Vibora de la Mar” (The Sea Snake), and plenty of food and drink. Guests are treated to a feast featuring Mexican cuisine staples such as tamales, mole, and an array of salsas. Tequila and mezcal flow freely, adding to the joyous spirit.
Decorations and Attire
Decorations at a Mexican wedding are typically vibrant and colorful, with bold hues of red, orange, and turquoise. Papel picado (cut paper banners) adorn the venue, adding a festive touch. Brides often wear elegant white gowns, but incorporating elements like embroidered shawls or flowers in their hair to honor Mexican heritage is common. Grooms may don traditional charro suits or a classic tuxedo.
Symbolism and Modern Touches
While modern Mexican weddings may incorporate contemporary elements, the essence remains the same. The importance of family, community, and faith is ever-present. Couples often blend traditional rituals with personal touches, creating a unique celebration that honors their heritage while embracing their individuality.
In essence, a wedding inspired by Mexican tradition is a heartfelt tribute to culture, faith, and the joyous union of two souls, surrounded by the warmth and support of family and friends.
