A Festival Country Wedding in Somerset, Not in Any of The Fancy Wedding Venues in Somerset
This beautiful wedding was held in the back garden of the bride’s mom, not in any of the fancy and beautiful wedding venues in Somerset (see a list at the end!). Tash and Ed were keen to avoid an ‘off the shelf’ wedding and since their home county is famous for Glastonbury it only felt right to give a nod in the festival direction when it came to their decor! Cue the awesome lanyards, fence signs, bunting and even a DIY bar! Plus say a big hello to their adorable dog Jaeger!
“We chose the festival/country theme for our wedding. It felt like the best way to reflect us & our likes and personalities. Since moving to Somerset 6 years ago we’ve embraced country life with our dog, Jaeger. The festival bits were a nod to our adopted home county’s famous Glastonbury Festival (a few miles from our venue). We were also keen to avoid an ‘off the shelf’ hotel/golf club/manor house wedding that you tick a few option boxes, pay your money and get the same wedding as the couple the week before. Having a unique day that we’d worked hard for was important to us and it paid off.
We DIY’ed loads of things; all the bunting (there was hundreds of metres) was homemade and borrowed from friends and relatives. Ed’s mum made our wedding cake and my Bridesmaid, Claire made 150 cupcakes for guests (as if she didn’t have enough to do, bless her!). We also made loads of blackboard signs using old boards and blackboard paint, and the festival signpost was made from old fence slats broken up and painted with the little tester pots of paint you can get. Our favourite DIY thing was the bar, which took about a day to build and looked better than I ever imagined. We were so lucky to have so much help from our friends with the crafty bits… turns out we have a lot of crafty friends!!
My favourite moment was seeing Ed waiting in the church as I walked down the aisle. We’d hardly seen each other for the week leading up to the wedding as we were so busy sorting things out and getting everything ready, so it was extra special to see him looking so handsome & happy waiting for me. We were so lucky with the weather too, and even though we would have made the most of it if we’d been stuck with typical English rain, the fact we had sunshine and clear blue sky’s all day made it that much more special. We had the most fantastic photographer as well. The very talented Kirsty from This & That Photography. Kirsty was the first person we booked up as soon as we’d set a date. We’d been lucky enough to have had photos with her before at my sister’s wedding & a family shoot the year before for my mum’s birthday. She always manages to capture the feeling of the day, not just the people. We love how the photos came out & will cherish them forever, particularly the ones on top of the hay bales – I still can’t believe she talked me into that, but so glad she did!
Our advice to anyone planning their big day would be to decide what you want and go out and get it, but not at the first price you’re given! Everyone, even wedding suppliers, will have a bottom line price and it’s down to you to haggle for it. Try and remember as well all the little details that make the difference and don’t skimp on spending a bit of money on things that will save you time and stress in the long run. Finally, make sure you use a fantastic photographer like we did, nothing extinguishes post-wedding blues like looking back at the beautiful photos that bring all the amazing emotions of the day back to you.”
