A Charming Colorful DIY Wedding with Mexican Flair and Vibrant Decorations
If you are as obsessed with Mexico and its culture as we are, then you might also be thinking of weaving a little Mexican flair into your wedding day? Is that you? Well, today’s wedding is going to be right up your ‘calle’ (street). Claudia & Jason’s DIY Spanish inspired celebration features the most amazing colorful ceremony altar, which also served as their reception backdrop and the bride, keen to share her Mexican heritage had her mum fly in her statement shawl and belt along with many other cultural items for the day. Check it out!
“Jason and I wanted to make our wedding a very fun and stress free affair. We are a very laid back couple who love to camp and hike, so we didn’t want to do anything out of sync with our personalities when it came to our wedding.” Began Claudia.
“We picked ‘Day of the Dead’ as our theme and wanted to make sure there was plenty of color and love throughout the celebration. We wanted to include all family members (alive or dead) so the theme seemed appropriate. We were starting our spiritual journey and what better way to do it.”
“We started planning out the wedding details in October 2015 and collecting bits and pieces of decorations then. Since my mother was in Mexico and would be flying in for the wedding, we asked her for a few things to bring back. I wanted to have a lot of my culture (I’m Mexican) shown throughout our wedding and my wonderful husband was happy to oblige.” She explained.
“My sister helped us tremendously when it came to putting the wedding together. She helped me make all the tissue paper flowers for the flower wall, put together the cactus and succulent centerpieces, and put together the bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids. She also, along with family and friends, helped decorate the venue and coordinate all of the “moments” for the wedding.”
“Our pictures were done by Jessica Williams of Jessica Williams Studio and she did a fantastic job. I fell completely in love with the pictures and the beauty of the moments she was able to capture. She was so energetic and positive that she helped everyone feel relaxed in each picture. I really liked all her advice on poses – a bride always wants to look her best.” Claudia added.
“The wedding day was filled with excitement and plenty of drinks to help us all along. The party itself was everything we had wanted. We had fun dancing, eating, drinking, and sharing every moment with our family and friends. We even played flip cup (that’s just how we roll :-p). I had never seen Jason dance so much. It was certainly a night to remember. We celebrated life, love, our ancestors, and the journey we vowed to start together.”

Tips for Creating DIY Mexican Wedding Decorations
If you’re looking to add vibrant flair to your wedding, DIY Mexican wedding decorations are a fantastic choice. These decorations not only bring bold colors and cultural significance but also offer a personal touch that can make your special day feel even more unique. Whether it’s crafting papel picado banners or designing stunning centerpieces, you’ll find that with a bit of creativity, you can effortlessly capture the spirit of a Mexican celebration while staying true to your own style. Let’s dive into some fun and creative ideas!
Papel Picado: The Heart of Mexican Wedding Decorations
When it comes to Mexican wedding decorations, papel picado is essential. These colourful paper banners, delicately cut into intricate patterns, add a festive charm to any celebration. They symbolize the beauty in simplicity, and I’ve found them surprisingly easy to make—you just need patience and scissors. Hang them across your reception or ceremony space, and you’ve got instant Mexican flair. You can even customise the designs to match your wedding colours or add personal messages!
Marigold Magic
In Mexican culture, marigolds represent life and celebration, making them ideal for Mexican wedding decorations. Their vibrant golden hues can light up any room. I helped a friend use marigolds to frame her altar and drape them as garlands, and it completely transformed the space. Not only are they beautiful, but their cultural significance adds a deeper meaning to your wedding decor. Plus, they’re easy to find and relatively affordable—win-win!
Mexican Centerpieces for Weddings
Creating Mexican centerpieces for weddings is where you can get really creative. Think of vibrant, bold displays using traditional Mexican elements like succulents, cacti, and colourful pottery. One time, I used small terracotta pots painted in bright colours and filled them with a mix of flowers and succulents—it added such a fun, rustic touch! You can also incorporate mini piñatas or even small papel picado flags into your Mexican centerpieces for weddings to tie everything together. These centrepieces not only look beautiful but can also reflect your personal style while staying true to the Mexican theme.
Tile Patterns & Piñatas: A Whimsical Touch
For a pop of colour and texture, use Mexican tile patterns as part of your decor. I’ve used them as table runners, and they instantly elevated the look of the entire setup. Plus, adding a piñata as part of your reception decorations brings a playful twist to your Mexican wedding decorations. At one wedding, the piñata was filled with mini tequila bottles instead of candy—it was an unforgettable and hilarious moment!
Great Colouristic ideas. I love this theme, and the pictures are stunning!
