An Anchorman Themed Wedding: Kate & Steve
If you have ever seen Anchorman you will know that today’s wedding is going to be kind of a big deal! You will also know that it is one of the funniest films you will ever see, so if you haven’t had the pleasure of watching it yet, get yourself off that sofa and go get yourself the DVD, trust me you will laugh your socks off! But before you do that hang around for a couple more minutes and feast your eyes on this delight. believe me you wont be dissapointed!
We asked anchorlady Kate to tell us all about it…
“I had become a little obsessed with weddings before Steve proposed so had already perused the internet for inspiration and created a secret Pinterest board dedicated to the big day. My Mum had always encouraged me to be creative when I was little which, has resulted in me studying Applied Arts at university and being obsessed with making ever since. So when Steve proposed on a sunny winter’s day on Whitstable beach, I saw this as an excellent opportunity to put my skills to use! After setting the date, we decided to hold the wedding at a beautiful place called St Julians in Sevenoaks, where my family and I have been going to since I was little. First on the to do list….design and make the invites.
Looking at how much the average wedding costs sent shivers down our spines so we wanted to cut costs as much as possible. I was keen to make my bridesmaid’s dresses as I teach students how to sew at the University for the Creative Arts. I designed and made a different dress for each of my bridesmaids and it was a real labour of love, but I was really happy with them. I didn’t want the stress of making my own dress so saved money by buying a beautiful sample dress and had it altered by my very generous friend.
We wanted to make our wedding personal to us and to keep it fun. Steve’s favourite film is Anchorman so this became the theme for the reception dinner. Each table was named after a character and we had big blown up pictures of their faces for the centrepieces. We displayed Ron Burgundy style moustaches for each guest on a big notice board to help them find their seats and we were so pleased that everyone entered into the fun by wearing them.
My sister-in-law runs, ‘Party in a Teacup’, and let us use some of the accessories she hires out for events, and was also kind enough to do all the flowers for us as a wedding present. These were displayed in decorated jars and bottles we had collected. I did the graphics on one of her framed blackboards telling our guests the order of the day, which is a service she now offers on her website. I love gardening, so we made our own packets of seed for favours with a little made up poem which Steve laboriously typed on the front of each one. I made cones of confetti, paper pompoms, bunting, hair accessories, place names, centrepieces….the list goes on!
My Mum made our delicious wedding cake made up of our favourite flavours and I used the lost art of potato printing to decorate doggy bags for guests who wanted to take some home. We were desperate to have a photo booth so we did a DIY version using a Polaroid camera. We collected and handmade props and steve’s Dad made us a frame to hang the photos on.
The day exceeded all our expectations and I only wish we could do it all over again. Making everything for our wedding was like a full time job and highlighted how I don’t set aside enough time to be creative these days. I have since decided to start a blog, adaylikethis.net, which is still a work in progress, but will give me a chance to share my various creative projects.
My advice for couples about to tie the knot….
Blow the budget on an excellent photographer…it’s the only thing you get to keep that reminds you of the day and you will never get bored of looking at the pics!
Little costs really add up so stick to a budget. It is probably one of the biggest days of your life but it is only one day and you don’t want to be paying it off for the rest of you life!!! Call in favours from friends and family and never underestimate how much money you can save by making things.
And finally, a piece of advice that everyone seems to give, which is to take a few moments during the day to take it all in and really enjoy it as it goes so quickly!”

Who wouldn’t want an Anchorman-themed wedding?
The iconic film, filled with wit, flamboyant suits, and moustache glory, lends itself perfectly to a memorable wedding day. I mean, when you think about it, the idea of weaving Ron Burgundy’s larger-than-life charm into such a special celebration is a stroke of genius.
Let’s be real—weddings can sometimes feel formulaic. But an Anchorman-themed wedding? Now, that’s stepping out of the box. Picture it: the groom and his entourage in 70s-inspired suits, rocking those bold colours and, dare I say, velvet? When I attended a wedding last summer that took a more quirky, unconventional route, it made all the difference in creating an unforgettable experience.
Of course, what’s a Burgundy wedding without humour? During the speeches, I can already imagine the best man channeling Brick Tamland, randomly shouting “I love lamp!” to a confused, but delighted crowd. It’s these little moments of surprise that keep guests entertained and invested in the event. And let’s face it, isn’t it refreshing to have a good laugh amidst all the seriousness that weddings can sometimes embody? I remember sitting through a painfully boring speech at a traditional wedding—this theme guarantees no one’s drifting off during the toasts.
Yet, I hear the potential naysayers. “A wedding is supposed to be sophisticated!” they’d claim. But who says it can’t be both? There’s an art to balancing the silliness with sincerity. You can still exchange heartfelt vows while Ron Burgundy quotes linger in the air. Think of it like putting spicy mustard on a fancy sandwich—it elevates the experience. The couple could playfully incorporate lines from the movie while still embracing the deeper emotions of the day. After all, love and laughter are two sides of the same coin, right?
And then, of course, there’s Baxter—the legendary dog. What better way to surprise guests than to have a four-legged ring bearer, paws confidently striding down the aisle? I’ve always been a sucker for a pet in a tuxedo, and seeing Baxter in action would be the ultimate moment of sheer joy.
In the end, an Anchorman-themed wedding takes the mundane and turns it into something extraordinary. It’s daring, it’s ridiculous in the best way, and most importantly, it’s a celebration that reflects the couple’s personality. And isn’t that the point of it all?
