DIY COLOURFUL SNOWFLAKE WREATH
A Christmas wreath is the perfect staple piece of decoration to brighten up any door, especially when you use bright colours like in our DIY snowflake one! Today’s wreath is SO easy to make but since the snowflakes are made out of colourful cardstock we recommend this be an indoor wreath (trust us, it looks just as cute on the inside PLUS that means you get to see it every time you walk past the front door!)
YOU WILL NEED:
A Cricut Explore // Polystyrene wreath // Craft paint in the colour of your choice (I went for pastel pink // A paintbrush // Colourful card // A glue gun //
STEP 1:
Paint your wreath in a colour that matches one of your cardstock colours, so that when there are gaps in the snowflakes showing through you’ll see colour instead of white polystyrene. Allow to fully dry.
STEP 2:
Open up the Cricut design space and under the image section, search ‘snowflake’ (this will give you over 580 results since the design space is THAT GOOD for images but just pick a simple one for this project.
STEP 3:
Size your snowflakes to an ideal size compared to your wreath, since my wreath was quite small I decided to size the snowflakes 2inches wide.
STEP 4:
Load your Cricut machine with your chosen cardstock and hit that go button! Leave your Cricut to cut out all of your snowflakes in that colour, and then once it’s finished load the machine with your next colour card. I think this wreath DIY works best 6-7 different colours.
STEP 5:
Once all of your snowflakes have been cut out all that’s left to do is glue them onto your wreath, varying the colours as you go, making sure no two similar colours are next to each other.
And that’s all there is to it! So cute and easy right?! Happy holidays ya’ll! xxx
Crafting Winter Magic: More DIY Snowflake Wreath Ideas and Tips
There’s something magical about snowflakes. They’re delicate, unique, and fleeting—a perfect encapsulation of winter’s charm. Now, imagine capturing that wonder and hanging it on your door. That’s the allure of a DIY snowflake wreath: a simple yet enchanting project that brings winter’s elegance to your home. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or someone who thinks a glue gun is a tool of mystery, creating a snowflake wreath is a project you can truly make your own. Let’s dive into some creative ideas, handy tips, and a bit of festive cheer to inspire your masterpiece.
The Sparkle of Simplicity
If minimalism speaks to you, a sleek and simple DIY snowflake wreath might be just what you need. Start with a plain grapevine or metal wreath form, easily found at craft stores or even your local discount shop. From there, add pre-made snowflake ornaments in silver, white, or clear acrylic. You can attach them with floral wire, hot glue, or even twist ties if you’re commitment-shy and like to reuse materials.
Pros:
- Quick and easy to assemble, making it perfect for last-minute decor.
- Neutral tones blend well with other holiday decorations.
Cons:
- Might lack the wow factor if you prefer bold and dramatic designs.
Personal Experience: One year, I threw together a minimalistic snowflake wreath in under an hour. It was like the little black dress of holiday decor—timeless and understated. Though it didn’t garner gasps, it was the perfect understated accent for a modern, snowy vibe.

Frosted Fantasies: Glitter and Glam
If you’re drawn to glitter like a magpie, this one’s for you. A DIY snowflake wreath that shimmers and sparkles can light up even the gloomiest winter day. To achieve this, spray-paint a foam wreath form in silver or icy blue. Next, coat snowflake ornaments in glitter (or buy pre-glittered ones—no judgment here!) and layer them densely around the wreath for a 3D effect. Add a final flourish with LED fairy lights to give your wreath that glowing, magical touch.
Pros:
- Glamorous and eye-catching, perfect for festive parties.
- The fairy lights create a cozy, enchanted atmosphere.
Cons:
- Glitter tends to migrate—prepare for sparkles in unexpected places.
- Can be time-intensive to create.
What I Learned: I once spent a solid weekend on a glitter-packed snowflake wreath. The result was stunning, but my husband was still finding glitter in his breakfast weeks later. My advice? Use a glitter-sealing spray or embrace the chaos.
Rustic Charm: Natural Meets Frosty
For a more rustic take, blend nature and whimsy in your DIY snowflake wreath. Start with a wreath base of twigs or pinecones, and mix in wooden or burlap snowflakes. Add some frosted greenery, such as eucalyptus or faux pine, and a burlap bow to complete the look. This wreath style pairs beautifully with farmhouse or cabin decor.
Pros:
- Brings warmth and coziness to your winter decorations.
- Sustainable if you use natural or recyclable materials.
Cons:
- May require more effort to find the right materials.
- Less sparkly if you’re into glam decor.
Symbolism: To me, this style feels like an homage to winter’s quieter moments—long walks in the woods, the crunch of snow underfoot, and that fleeting stillness just before snowfall.
Kid-Friendly Creativity
If you’ve got little helpers at home, why not make your DIY snowflake wreath a family affair? Start with a foam or cardboard wreath base, and have the kids cut out paper snowflakes. Let their creativity shine—no two snowflakes need to be alike! Glue them onto the base, then sprinkle with fake snow or iridescent glitter.
Pros:
- A wonderful way to involve kids in holiday preparations.
- Easy and budget-friendly.
Cons:
- Likely to look more “homemade” than polished.
- Glitter and glue can turn into a sticky mess.
Reflection: When my daughter was younger, we made a snowflake wreath together. Sure, it wasn’t Pinterest-perfect, but it radiated joy and became a treasured memory. Sometimes, it’s about the process, not perfection.

The Unexpected Touch: Non-Traditional Colours
Who says snowflakes have to be white? If you’re feeling adventurous, try a DIY snowflake wreath in unexpected colours. Think pastel blues and pinks for a dreamy winter wonderland or bold reds and greens for a more classic holiday look. Use painted or fabric snowflakes and match them with coordinating ribbons and baubles for a cohesive vibe.
Pros:
- Makes your wreath stand out from the crowd.
- Lets you experiment with colour schemes that suit your personality.
Cons:
- Might clash with traditional holiday decor.
- Not everyone will appreciate the departure from convention.
My Thoughts: I went rogue last year with a hot-pink-and-gold snowflake wreath. It was bold, it was daring, and it looked fabulous on my turquoise front door. Moral of the story? Colour outside the lines—you might love the result.
Tips for DIY Success
- Layer, Layer, Layer: Snowflakes look best when layered in different sizes and textures. Mix plastic, metal, wood, and paper for visual interest.
- Adhesive Smarts: Use the right glue for the job. Hot glue works for most materials, but for foam wreaths, try a foam-safe adhesive to avoid accidental melting.
- Keep It Balanced: Lay out your design before gluing to ensure symmetry. Or, if you’re feeling rebellious, embrace the asymmetrical trend.
- Don’t Overthink It: Sometimes, a little imperfection is what makes your wreath charming.
Final Thoughts
Making a DIY snowflake wreath is more than just a crafty pastime—it’s a chance to express your unique style and add a personal touch to your holiday decor. Whether you go minimal, maximal, rustic, or unconventional, the joy of creating something with your hands makes it all worthwhile.
So grab your glue gun, a pile of snowflakes, and your favourite playlist. Before you know it, you’ll have a stunning wreath that turns your front door into a winter wonderland. And who knows? It might just inspire a neighbour to start their own crafting adventure.
So colourful! I do love my Cricut, so many possibilities. I’d also love to see this in all white, maybe with a few jewelled centres and for something completely different, one made with black skull shapes. Love it! Sue
