Wedding DIY: How To Make Flower Shoes!
Searching for tips on making your own DIY flower shoes? You’ve reached the right place! As much as I love new shoes, having a bank balance to constantly buy them is a very distant dream! This is why it’s always a good idea to go back through the shoes you already have and turn an old, never worn, pair into something new and beautiful! All you need to do this is a bunch of small, medium, and large artificial flowers, glue, scissors, and a pair of shoes! It really couldn’t be simpler…Here, as part of our DIY tips and ideas, let me show you…
While designing your custom wedding shoes, it’s important to consider comfort as much as style. Adding orthotic insoles can provide extra support, ensuring you stay comfortable through the ceremony, photos, and hours of dancing. Look for insoles with good arch support and cushioning that fit seamlessly into your chosen shoe style. Additionally, choose shoes with a sturdy base and secure straps or laces to keep your feet well-supported all day. And don’t forget to break in your DIY shoes ahead of time to avoid any surprises on your big day!”
Now let’s delve into Making Your DIY Flower Shoes…
Step 1: Take your artificial flowers and cut the stems off, you’ll want to create as flat a bottom to the flower as you can!
Step 2: Take your smallest flowers, in my case the purple ones, and start to glue them down the edge of the shoe. I used four flowers here.
Step 3: Glue on your medium-sized flower and place a few smaller ones underneath it!
Step 4: Time for the big beautiful flower! Glue this one in place on the front of the shoe but slightly more towards the edge so it’s not completely central.
Step 5: Using your small flowers again continue layering and gluing them until you reach the edge of the shoe!
Step 6: Complete the pattern on the other shoe and you’re done!
Easy right? Go on…Give it a go…I know you want a pair!
More DIY Flower Shoes Tips and Ideas
If you’re here, chances are you’ve been bitten by the DIY bug—and let me tell you, there’s no better project to sink your creative teeth into than making your own DIY flower shoes. Whether you’re planning a wedding, looking to jazz up an old pair of kicks, or just wanting to unleash your inner artist, flower shoes are the perfect blend of whimsy and practicality. As someone who’s been blogging about weddings and creative crafts for over a decade, trust me when I say: these shoes are not just accessories—they’re wearable art.
Why Flower Shoes?
Let’s start with the obvious question: Why flower shoes? Because they’re fun, versatile, and completely unique. Floral shoes can transform any outfit into a statement. Want to turn heads at your wedding? Picture yourself walking down the aisle in stunning flower heels, each petal swaying gently with every step. Or maybe you’re more of a sneakers gal (me too, honestly). Floral sneakers are the ultimate way to combine comfort with style. Plus, they’re a great conversation starter. Who wouldn’t want to hear the story behind your DIY kicks?
The Essentials: What Every DIY Flower Shoe Needs
Now, before you go crazy with the glue gun, let’s talk essentials. A great pair of flower shoes isn’t just about slapping on some faux daisies and calling it a day. Oh no, my friend, there’s an art to this.
- Comfort First: Let’s be real. If you can’t walk, dance, or even stand in your shoes, what’s the point? Invest in good-quality orthotic insoles. They’ll keep your feet happy through hours of celebration, whether you’re rocking flower heels at a wedding or floral sneakers at a festival.
- Stability Matters: Ever worn a pair of wobbly heels? It’s like walking on a tightrope, except there’s no safety net. Choose shoes with a solid base and secure fit. Trust me, nothing ruins the magic of flower heels faster than a twisted ankle.
- Durable Materials: Use high-quality faux flowers that won’t fray, fade, or fall apart after the first wear. You want your floral shoes to last longer than your Instagram story, right?
- Waterproofing: A little drizzle shouldn’t destroy your masterpiece. Consider spraying your finished flower shoes with a waterproof sealant. This is especially important for outdoor events.
- Break Them In: This might be the most overlooked tip. Test-drive your shoes around the house before the big day. You’ll thank yourself when you’re dancing without blisters.
My First Attempt at DIY Flower Shoes (Spoiler: It Was a Disaster)
I’ll never forget the first time I tried making my own flower heels. I was so excited to debut them at a friend’s wedding. I picked out the prettiest pink roses, carefully glued them onto a pair of nude pumps, and added a sprinkle of glitter for good measure. I thought I was the next Martha Stewart.
Cut to the wedding reception: I’m on the dance floor, twirling away, when I notice petals trailing behind me like breadcrumbs. By the end of the night, my shoes looked like a sad, wilted bouquet. Lesson learned: hot glue alone isn’t enough. Now I use a combination of industrial-strength adhesive and stitching to secure the flowers. Trust me, it’s worth the extra effort.
Types of Flower Shoes to Try
1. Flower Heels: The Showstoppers
Flower heels are the ultimate statement piece. They’re perfect for weddings, proms, or any event where you want to make an impression. One idea I love is wrapping the heel in a vine-like pattern with small blossoms climbing up the back. It’s romantic, elegant, and surprisingly easy to do.
Pros: Eye-catching, great for formal events. Cons: Not ideal for long periods of walking.
2. Floral Sneakers: Comfort Meets Style
If heels aren’t your thing (I get it, they’re not mine either), floral sneakers are the way to go. They’re comfortable, practical, and can be dressed up or down. I once made a pair with tiny daisies and pearls for a garden party, and they were a hit. Bonus: You can actually run around in them without fear of losing a flower.
Pros: Comfortable, versatile, and durable. Cons: Less formal than flower heels.
3. Floral Flats: Best of Both Worlds
Flats are a happy medium. They’re more comfortable than heels but still chic enough for special occasions. A simple pair of ballet flats adorned with pastel blooms can be just as stunning as elaborate flower heels.
Pros: Comfortable yet stylish. Cons: Limited elevation for shorter folks (like me).
Tips for Securing Flowers
If you’ve ever tried DIYing anything, you know that things don’t always go as planned. Flowers falling off, glue seeping through—it’s a nightmare. Here’s how to avoid the common pitfalls:
- Use a Strong Base: Attach flowers to a fabric or ribbon strip first, then secure that to the shoe. This provides extra stability.
- Mix Your Adhesives: Combine hot glue for quick bonding with a strong industrial adhesive for long-term hold.
- Add Stitching: For fabric shoes, stitching the flowers on adds an extra layer of security. It’s tedious but worth it.
The Symbolism of Flowers in Shoes
Have you ever thought about why we’re so drawn to floral designs? Flowers symbolize growth, beauty, and new beginnings—all things we’re celebrating when we wear these shoes. On my wedding day, I wore floral heels with tiny forget-me-nots because they symbolize remembrance. Every time I look at those shoes, I’m reminded of the love and joy of that day.
Unexpected Uses for Flower Shoes
You might be thinking, “What else can I do with flower shoes besides wear them?” Plenty! They make amazing photo props for weddings or engagement shoots. I’ve even seen brides use them as part of their centerpieces. Talk about a multi-functional craft!
Final Thoughts
Making your own DIY flower shoes is more than just a craft—it’s an expression of creativity, personality, and love. Whether you’re strutting in flower heels, dancing in floral sneakers, or twirling in floral flats, your shoes will tell a story that’s uniquely yours. I’m so going to do this!
I’m doing this for my wedding! Except with sunflowers =]
What kind of glue did you use??
Ok this is a great idea to start with when pimping your shoes but come on all those flowers on the shoes make them look bad so next time I would put on like one or two because that’s just too much. On the other hand tho, it would one thing to put that many for a costume
Thanks for getting in touch! The number of flowers completely depends on your personal taste which is the great thing about DIY – you can create your own based on your individual style and taste 🙂
