Edge of the World Cliff Wedding: Katie and Ben’s Northen Ireland Elopement at the Giant’s Causeway
The moment we saw the breathtaking images of Katie and Ben’s cliff wedding at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, we knew we had to share it with you. We caught up with photographer Anthony Tomassi to hear the captivating story behind this stunning Northern Ireland elopement…and for those planning their own clifftop nuptials, some useful tips for a Northern Ireland cliffside wedding can be found below.
“I met the Groom Ben about 10 years ago at a previous job of mine. We became good friends quickly, seeing the nerdy connection we shared. I spent many holidays and dinners with Ben. Eventually, he met his now wife Katie, and getting to know her was such a joy seeing a good friend so happy with a wonderful partner. I eventually found out that her father is J.M. DeMatteis, who is a famous comic book writer who’s done some of the greatest books I’ve ever read! Geeking out about that made all our connections even stronger.
Years later, Ben popped the question and eventually, he contacted me about working with them as their wedding photographer. I was so honored to be a friend and trusted vendor for them on their big day. They loved my work and wanted a friend and someone they trust by their side. Plans were starting to get made, and at first, their wedding was going to be in Vermont. A quaint barn wedding with a few dozen people in the woods and lots of dancing. Eventually, I got another message from the bride that the plans had changed, they were now planning on flying across the world and getting married in Ireland.
While I’ve seen it all – from rustic barn weddings in the Cotswolds to opulent ballroom affairs in London – there’s something undeniably magical about a cliff wedding, especially when it’s a Northern Ireland elopement, as you can see from the breathtaking photos above.
The sheer drama of it all! The crashing waves, the wind tugging at your veil, the vertiginous drop below… it’s like stepping into a real-life fairytale. And when that storybook setting comes to life against the rugged beauty of the Northern Irish coast, it’s enough to make even the most pragmatic heart believe in happily ever after.
Planning a cliffside wedding for your Northern Ireland elopement might feel overwhelming, but trust me, it’s more than possible. With a little research, a touch of Irish luck, and a whole lot of love, you can craft a day as extraordinary as your story.
Location, Location, Location (and a Pinch of Luck)
Of course, the first step is finding the perfect location. And when it comes to cliff weddings in Northern Ireland, you’re truly spoilt for choice. The dramatic Antrim Coast, with its soaring cliffs and breathtaking views, is an obvious contender.
- The Giant’s Causeway: Need I say more? The photos above say it all! This UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its otherworldly basalt columns, provides an awe-inspiring backdrop for any cliffside wedding. Imagine exchanging vows with the Atlantic Ocean roaring in the distance – pure magic!
- Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge: For the adventurous couple, a wedding ceremony near this iconic bridge, perched precariously on a clifftop, would be an unforgettable experience. Just be prepared for a few wobbly knees!
- Ballintoy Harbour: This picturesque harbour, with its colorful fishing boats and dramatic coastal scenery, offers a more intimate and secluded setting for a cliffside Northen Ireland elopement.

But remember, finding the perfect location is about more than just stunning views. Consider factors like accessibility, weather conditions, and local regulations. It’s always a good idea to consult with a local wedding planner who can guide you through the intricacies of planning a cliff wedding in Northern Ireland.
Embrace the Elements (and Don’t Forget the Wellies!)
Let’s be honest, the Irish weather can be unpredictable. One minute you’re basking in sunshine, the next you’re battling a gale-force wind and a torrential downpour. But fear not, intrepid couple! Embrace the elements.
- Embrace the unpredictable: Instead of fighting against the weather, why not incorporate it into your Northen Ireland elopement? Think dramatic storm clouds, rainbows arcing across the sky, and the sound of crashing waves as the soundtrack to your vows.
- Invest in a wet weather plan: Have a backup plan in place for inclement weather. This could include a marquee, a nearby indoor venue, or even a plan to postpone the ceremony to a later date.
- Dress accordingly: Choose attire that can withstand the elements. Think sturdy shoes (wellies are a must!), waterproof jackets, and cozy blankets for your guests.
A Touch of Irish Charm
No cliff wedding in Northern Ireland is complete without a touch of Irish charm.
- Live Irish music: Hire a traditional Irish band or musician to entertain your guests. The lively music will add a unique and unforgettable touch to your celebrations.
- Local delicacies: Incorporate local delicacies into your Northen Ireland elopement menu. Think fresh seafood, locally sourced meats, and traditional Irish cheeses.
- Irish whiskey toast: Raise a glass of Irish whiskey to celebrate your love and toast to a lifetime of happiness.
Personal Anecdote:
I remember one cliffside wedding I covered at a secluded cove near Ballycastle. The bride, a true adventurer, insisted on an outdoor ceremony, despite the forecasted rain. And rain it did! But instead of panicking, the couple and their guests embraced the unexpected. They donned brightly colored raincoats, huddled under umbrellas, and laughed as the wind whipped through their hair. It was a truly unforgettable experience, a testament to the resilience of love and the beauty of embracing the unexpected.
Planning Your Cliffside Northen Ireland Elopement
