Christmas DIY: How To Make An Envelope Advent Calendar
Holidays are coming….Holidays are coming….Super excited for Christmas this year! (I’m totally excited every year to be honest!) I can think of no better way to welcome in December than with an advent Calendar! Sure, you could buy those easy advent calendars from the super market with those tiny little chocolates in….OR you could make this awesome calendar and fill it with personal notes, treats and even date nights for your other half! It also couldn’t be easier and makes such a nice personal additional to a room!
You will need:
♥ A canvas (whatever size you choose) ♥ Christmas spirit ♥ A selection of cards in festive patterns ♥ Scissors ♥ All purpose glue ♥ 1 Long piece of ribbon ♥ White Card ♥ Sharpie ♥ Optional mini red bows ♥ Contents to fill the advent calendar with; chocolates, notes, sweets, mini presents, etc
Step 1: Cut a piece of the festive card into a square, this can be any size you like because we’re going to vary all the different sizes of the envelopes! This particular piece if 8cm by 8cm.
Step 2: Fold 2 of the corners in until their corners touch in the middle of the square.
Step 3: Fold the bottom up then place glue on the edge and hold in place so it sticks to the other two triangles.
Step 4: Finally bend the top port of the envelope down ready and put to one side.
Step 5: To create the rectangular envelopes you’ll first need to fold in the corners but only slightly. You don’t want their corners to meet this time.
Step 6: Fold up the bottom part of the envelope and glue in place, then chop the top off so it’s all in line and neat.
Step 7: Fold down the top part of the envelope again and then put to one side!
Step 8: Repeat these steps varying the size of the squares each time until you have 25 beautiful envelopes! Next you’ll need to position them on your canvas, don’t worry if they don’t all fit first time, this really is like a jigsaw puzzle so just juggle them around until you’re happy with their position! Of course, as you’re making the envelopes you can start to place them on the canvas so you get an idea of how you small or large you should be making the rest of the envelopes.
Step 9: Start to fill your envelopes with gold coins, chocolates, notes, mini presents, etc, whatever takes your fancy and you can fit in the envelope!
Step 10: Place a small piece of double sided tape at the top of the inside of the envelope then fold it over and stick in place to seal the envelope.
Step 11: Take a piece of card, and with your sharpies draw on the number then cut it out! If you’re not too confident drawing big chunky letters then you can always print some out using whatever font you like!
Step 12: Continue to do this until all envelopes are filled and sealed with their numbers on top!
Step 13: Next you’ll want to glue them in place! Depending on what’s inside them you’ll need a strong glue just in case the envelopes are a little bit heavy.
Step 14: Take your double sided tape and place a long strip all the way across the top of the canvas, then tie a big bow in your ribbon and stick it to the tape! I then tied my ribbon at the back of the canvas so it could be hung up if the receiver wanted to!
Step 15: This is optional but I think it’s cute! Glue on your tiny red bows on random envelopes to complete the decoration.
Step 16: You’re done! Either hang it up or leave it sitting pretty on the floor!
What do you think? I love the suspense of the person who you’re giving it to not knowing what’s inside every day, I think it adds that little bit extra of excitement to December!
Happy crafting!
Much Bespoke Love
Hi! What size canvas did you use? I’d like to do the same just so I can get an idea of the lay out of the evelopes and how big it will be. Thank you! X
Hi there, the canvas was around 30cm by 50cm 🙂
