DIY: How to Make Felt Ombre Cake Toppers

Every month I am get so excited to see what the girls from Strange Case Collective have cooked up for our readers and every month I fall in love with their creations. This week is no different and I have to admit I think these felt ombre cake toppers have to be my favourite DIY of theirs yet, not just because I love anything to do with cake but because I am still swooning over the ombre trend that seems to have taken wedding world by storm lately.

“For the past month our life has revolved a little bit around cake. One, because we love it and two, because we’re about to launch our Etsy shop and it includes a full range of cake toppers! How exciting! So for this months guest post we thought we would show you how to make a really simple, ombre cake topper.

Step 1: You will need – 3 sheets of felt in different shades of the same colour. We chose pink!// 3 bamboo skewers// A pair of scissors// Needle and thread// Stuffing. (We used the inside of an old cushion, but you can buy it separately from any haberdashery or craft shop.)// Pen or pencil//

Step 2: Draw out your letters on each sheet of felt. To create an ombre effect, go from dark to light.

Step 3: Fold your felt in half and cut out your letter. Cutting two at the same time will ensure they are both the same size.

Step 4: Cut out your remaining letters.

Step 5: Sew your two letters together.

Step 6: Leave the bottom of the Y open, as you need to stuff it and add the skewer before finishing off the sewing.

Step 7: Insert the stuffing. If it’s a little fiddley, use your skewer to get the stuffing into the corners.

Step 8: Push your skewer into the bottom of the letter and then sew the rest of the letter closed. Trapping the skewer inside.

Step 9: Repeat steps 4 – 6 with A and Y.

Step 10: You’re done! Now find yourself a lovely cake and stick them in the top.

You don’t have to stop there though, we think they would look really cute as a number for a birthday, initials for a wedding cake, or spelling the word love. You really can go wild!”

How cute are these for personalising your cake, in fact I am off to give these a go as I currently have my nans chocolate topped Banana cake cooling in the kitchen as it is her birthday tomorrow. These will make that perfect little extra touch!
