A Mexican Fiesta Engagement Shoot!

Oh my days as if I wasn’t excited enough about heading off to Mexico in a couple of weeks, this engagement shoot dropped into our inbox and I went into overdrive! The styling and photography of this beautiful shoot is Mexico down to a tee, the colours, the paper picado and of course…the piñata! There’s also a ton of sequins, Mexican desserts, fun confetti and a whole lotta love making this one festive fiesta you won’t want to miss!

“Leslie and Jessie wanted something to represent their Mexican heritage. This styled session was held in Borges Ranch in Walnut Creek, CA. Borges Ranch is an amazing location filled with vibrant colors and historic artifacts. I wanted to create a colorful styled photo shoot inspired by the couples hertiage, but we also wanted to add some color, we wanted to represent a true mexican fiesta. We knew that confetti, sequin, and bright colors were a must. We incorporated a lot of fuchsia, gold, orange, yellow, purple hues to go with the overall theme fiesta theme.

I love to create really fun wedding ideas so when planning a a vibrant colorful Mexican fiesta I knew I would incorporate some traditional elements but spice it up by adding sequins which is a huge trend in 2014. The setting is set to resemble a chic but festive Mexican vibe. We combined traditional baked make deserts with modern inspired cake pops and macaroons. Traditional Mexican vases known as jarritos were used used for a more traditional look.

The flowers were a mix of bright colors which add a touch of rustic feel we wanted the shoot to be inspired by the style, culture, and colors of Mexico. I knew I wanted to include traditional elements such as papel picado, maracas, mexican desserts. I also wanted to include paper flowers to create the perfect fiesta..

What’s So Special about a Mexican Engagement?

First, let’s talk about the “pedida de mano” (asking for the hand). This is a formal event where the groom, accompanied by his parents, visits the bride’s home to ask for her hand in marriage. The groom’s father usually leads the conversation, seeking the blessing of the bride’s parents, emphasizing respect and the union of two families.

Next, the engagement party itself is a feast for the senses. Picture this: vibrant decorations in hues of red, green, and gold; tables laden with traditional Mexican dishes like tamales, mole, and pozole; and of course, the ever-present mariachi band serenading the couple and guests with lively tunes. The energy is infectious, with dancing, laughter, and an abundance of love in the air.

The exchange of “arras,” or thirteen gold coins, is a touching tradition where the groom gives these coins to the bride as a symbol of his commitment to providing for their future together. Family is at the heart of Mexican engagements. From the eldest to the youngest, everyone plays a part. The “compadres” (godparents) are chosen to support the couple through their engagement and marriage, often playing pivotal roles in the wedding itself.

My personal experience with a Mexican engagement left me in awe of the depth of tradition and the palpable sense of community. The warmth, the heartfelt speeches, the joyous music—everything combined to create an atmosphere that felt both timeless and incredibly intimate.
