The Rustic Garden Wedding of Childhood Sweethearts; Lucy & Ryan
Ryan moved to Australia in 2007 and became a boarder at the same school as Lucy, she spotted him on his first day at school and thought that he was unlike anyone she had ever met… Ryan eventually plucked up the courage to ask Lucy out on a “year 11 trip” while on the bus, she thought he was going to say that he wasn’t interested in her but he was actually trying to ask her out! Everything was ok once they held hands, and the rest is history…
Setting the scene…
The venue was all about creating a space that was warm and inviting. We loved the long tables and wooden deck with a sensational outlook onto Sittella’s yellowing vineyards. It hard the “out-doors” feel while being particle for the wet weather that eventuated. The café blinds and heaters were on for the reception but this created such a special intimate, warm feel to the night. We enhanced the space with low strung festoon lighting from Micktric lighting, which gave a lovely soft feel.
Lucy’s dress…
After a bit of a hectic day wedding planning I decided to take a stroll down my favourite shopping strip- Napoleon St, Cottesloe. I wandered into the then called “My Catwalk” store (now A.C.O)- a shop filled with gorgeous pieces I could only ever “window shop”. Nestled in a tiny rack at the back of the store labelled “sale” I stumbled across what was to be my wedding dress. Perfect size, something out of the ordinary and 1/3 of the price- I was sold! I quickly rang mum and she came down with my great grandma (97 years old!!) and they bought it for me. It was the first thing I tried on. I designed the veil with some 1920’s inspiration and my grandma had it made by Kubank designs. I love the drama in the length and it made for some great photos blowing in the wind. My jewellery was from Esola (Cottesloe), I hope to keep it as a family heirloom.
Bridesmaids…
Navy was always the dream. The fit was elegant and classic. It was a great day of shopping with a fantastic result. I was so glad that Megan could join us from NSW for the day too! I liked it that my sister, Nina, who is only 15, had a dress that was a bit more fun and she stood out which was special.
Groom & Groomsman…
Ryan is a jacket man- he loves a jacket that fits just right. We liked the navy and brown shoes, it was a bit more relaxed and fitted in with the more laid back style we were going for. Ryan’s bow tie was a vintage market find.
Themes…
I’ve dabbled in a bit of interior design and so I loved creating a visual mood board for the day. I bought far too many magazines but loved hacking them up and putting my favourite pics in a scrap book. Most of our decorating was DIY, Ryan and his Dad worked really hard to create the flower boxes for the centre pieces out of old palettes. The flowers were a really important aspect of the décor. We were very privileged to have 5 generations working on the flowers. My great grandma- 97 years old- made all the button holes and my cousin flew in from Singapore with her daughter “Poppy” who was flower girl. We spent the day before the wedding going to the flower market and putting together the flowers. The tuberoses smelt incredible!
Favourite moments…
When the bridesmaids saw Lucy in her dress for the first time, family and friends flew in from all over the world, each table of guests was asked to make a poem about the bride and groom at the reception- which turned into a hilarious event- even involving an impromptu rap! One of the groomsman also accidentally had a security tag left on his pants which turned into a funny game of spot the tag in the wedding photos!
Advice to others…
Travel in a separate car to the rest of the bridal party on the way to your photo location. This was one of our favourite moments of the day, just the two of us. Also- have a Polaroid or snap shot camera with the bridal party, you get some very funny snap shots of the day that are another great memory.
