“There’s something for everyone here, from vintage style roses, pretty striped pastels, rustic botanicals and even a lovely travel themed airmail design. I have thoughtfully created each design with linear aspects for ease of application and a seamless finish. You don’t need any baking, creative or DIY experience to make this project work… Hopefully the fact that I can do it despite my very questionable existent baking skills (I’m unfortunately much better at eating cake than making it!) will inspire you to give it a go.
Bon appetit!
It’s best to firm up your cake plan first – will you commission the cake from a local cake artisan, purchase it online or perhaps enlist the help of an experienced friend or relative to help you bake it? Either way, bear in mind that having a completely smooth finish and white or pale icing is essential for this DIY to look its best.
Work out how much edible icing paper you’ll need to cover your cake. To do this, you may find it helpful to work out the circumference of your cake tiers by using this simple online conversion tool. Each of these printable sheets has 3 strips measuring 6.1cm x 26cm {totalling 69cm in length per sheet} We recommend over-ordering by 25% so you have enough should any mishaps occur while you’re using it.
Find a company who can print your design onto edible icing paper (US letter size, or UK A4 size) and place your order. With regards to timing, please note you will want to use your strips within 2 months of purchase, and store them in a cool, shaded place within their original packaging until application. For our US edible icing paper company recommendation please click here, or for a UK recommendation visit this site.
It’s best to decorate the cake with your strips as close to the big day as possible (I did mine 2 evenings before and it was fine). Start by getting out everything you’ll need including; The cake, scissors, your patterned icing sheets, a tube (with a nozzle) of white icing or alternatively a pot of edible glue and fine brush.
If you have ordered a tiered cake, be aware it will need assembling using the dowling rods provided to make the tiers strong enough to hold each other. Do this first, providing that you have the means to transport it to the venue once assembled, as it will no longer fit in the original boxes.
Let’s get started then shall we?
STEP 1: Carefully cut out your edible icing paper strips with the plastic backing still on.
STEP 2: Remove the backing plastic of one strip and place it design side down, taking care not to handle the paper too much unnecessarily, and avoid doing this in a very warm kitchen as it’s very delicate and can rip easily.
STEP 3: Squeeze small dots of icing (or if using edible glue, paint it on in a similar way) at 1 inch intervals around the outside of your strip (on the back/non-printed side), and carefully apply it around the cake, smoothing it down lightly. Repeat with each strip until your cake is covered.
STEP 4: As an optional extra, you can pin ribbon, sequins or other pretty trimmings around the tops of the strips for a super seamless finish.”
