A Handcrafted Nautical Wedding: Jenni & Paul
“Oh I do like to be beside the seaside, I do like to be beside the sea!”
Ahem sorry I couldn’t help myself! I am most happiest when I am on a beach and surprisingly British seasides have to be up there as one of my favourite places to visit. There is something so quaint about eating fish and chips from a traditional chippy whilst overlooking the sea so it is no surprise to me that Jenni and Paul wanted to include a little bit of old fashioned seaside fun on their wedding day.
We invited Jenni to tell us all about her nautical themed wedding along with her many DIY projects including the best maritime seating plan I have ever seen!

“When Paul proposed on his birthday I was shocked. We had been together for almost 7 years, just bought our first house and got ourselves a beautiful little kitten. I had wanted to get married for a while, yet for him to propose on his birthday was completely out of the blue.
We started the wedding planning the very next day. I have a love of all things vintage and had noticed a ‘Lovely and Vintage’ wedding fair the day after the proposal so we went to have a look. Paul is also a keen sailor so I wanted to have a combination of the two for our wedding. So our theme was set. We choose the Queen’s hotel in Southsea as it was right on the coast and we had met and lived in Southsea, almost opposite the hotel so it seemed the perfect place to have our wedding.
I love craft and was so excited that our wedding would give me a chance to be creative. It started with our save the dates. My twin sister took some photos of a walk Paul and I went on and our friend who is a graphic designer made the small images. Unbeknown to myself, Paul had asked the graphic designer to add some pirates into the background. They are hidden and if you look really close you can make these out. We then made these into small magnets and sent them out to friends and family. Then the crafting really started. All my friends and family were so supportive and helped us make everything. It was nice having people around and making all of the different pieces. I think it adds a real family feel, where everyone feels involved and a very personal touch to the day. Some of the craft that I made included fabric flowers, pompom flowers, wooden bunting, wooden cake toppers and sailing boat place names. Pinterest was a huge influence on our theme, design and the creative ideas. I also read blogs and magazines to create mood boards to shape the ideas that I had.
I loved the whole process of wedding planning and it is quite amazing how many ‘special days’ you can get out of one wedding such as bridesmaid shopping, buying the rings etc.
One of my favourite parts of the day was the ‘daddy dance off’. I had made a chalk board with dance floor rules on. Our friends and family loved this along with the jukebox and eventually there was a dance competition between our dads. I also loved how our personalities shone through on the day. We have a love of zombies and Paul combined this with his love of lego and had lego zombie cufflinks. I love original shoes and was able to wear a beautiful pair of Irregular Choice shoes. We also had a photobooth which people enjoyed and were able to take a second picture as their wedding favours and a vintage ice cream trike to serve people with their welcome drinks, which went down a treat.
Paul and I loved having the ride in the car from the church to the reception. Jenny Owens was amazing and made us feel so relaxed after we were married and we got a lovely photo when we were in the car. I also loved the fact that we went to the seafront (on a busy bank holiday Saturday) to have our pictures taken. A vintage Beetle, even stopped and played the wedding march with their car horn!
Our friends and family were a huge part in the day. We wanted everyone to feel happy and relaxed and this vibe went throughout the day. We choose not to have too many group photos but the ones we do have are stunning and mean the world to us.
It was the perfect day and our friends and family still can not stop talking about it. I am just waiting for my friends to get married so I can help with the crafting again!”
