A Glitterific, Scientific, Museum Wedding: Sophie & Nick
When it comes to planning my own wedding there are two things that are on my ‘must have’ list and these are glitter and animals, so todays wedding wins double points as it features both! I am totally in love with the venue the couple chose to get married at Manchester Museum which is pretty much my dream venue as it has its very own Vivarium dedicated to the conservation of reptiles. The couple also accessorized with lots of handmade details including giving the guests Observer guides as favours and using a giant copy of the Orion Nebula as a seating chart. Not only that the guests got to handle some of the creatures from the Vivarium which I have to admit, made me a little jel, see for yourself…
We asked Sophie to share the details of her day… “We had always said we wanted to get married in Manchester Museum and it was the only venue we looked it because, for us, it was perfect. We didn’t have a very rigid theme, it was just a combination of things we loved…science and glitter apparently!
We sourced 50+ copies of various Observer’s guides as wedding favours and tried to match them to the guests so everyone would get something they were interested in. We did quite a bit of DIY, we covered all the jars in gold glitter, I designed all the table names and we spray painted the frames with gold, for our seating chart we scanned in a picture of the Orion nebula from an old book on astronomy and had it blown up onto a big board, I wrote the guests names in calligraphy and we pinned them onto the board. I also hand cut all the confetti to scatter over the tables. For our table runners, we found a gorgeous fabric in Ikea covered in scientific illustrations – perfect for the museum! – and a friend cut and hemmed them into runners. I bake a lot for my blog and have done wedding cakes before so I didn’t want to pay hundreds of pounds for someone else to do it but I also didn’t want the added stress of making my wedding cake so we had a tower of doughnuts. I did bake some stress free treats for the dessert table and we had a mini cheese tower as well, which we sadly never actually got to try.
We also planned all of the music ourselves. We are both huge music lovers and we didn’t feel happy paying a generic DJ to play the top 40 for us so we designed playlists on Spotify for each part of the wedding, even the order the songs would play in so they faded into each other correctly. The music was a real labour of love and we will treasure those playlists forever. The venue allowed us to plug our laptop into their PA system and a man was there to stop and start each playlist at the right times.
Craig and Ronnie were the perfect addition to our day, so many people have told us how much they loved our photographers. There were lots of things we didn’t see in the day because it was so busy but they managed to capture so much of what happened that we have a lovely record of the parts we missed. Our florist was amazing and she did the flowers exactly how I wanted them.
I actually did a pretty stressful thing for most brides and changed my mind about my dress three months before the wedding. Luckily it all worked out very well and I couldn’t have been happier with the dress I had in the end. I wouldn’t recommend a bride does this unless she is absolutely sure and I was fortunate that the shop I originally went to were very understanding and did not make me pay for the whole dress. This is very rare.
Our favourite moment was our entrance down the stairs just before the meal. It was nice to have those few minutes together waiting for everyone to sit down before we made our entrance.
Our biggest piece of advice would be just try and enjoy the day, you’ve put so much work into it that you should have fun. It goes SO quickly. There will be things that don’t get put out or included, for example, we had a tassel garland to go on the ceremony table that never got put up. If that happens it obviously wasn’t that important or you would have remembered at the time so don’t worry.”

I am so excited that we got to share this wedding with you! It is the perfect example of how to make two unseemingly related themes work together, no matter how bizarre!
