GUMMY BEARS & NERF GUNS! A COLOURFUL HANDMADE WEDDING AT A FOREST RETREAT
Colourful, personalised and handmade are huge buzz words around here, so when we laid our eyes on Ryan and Kirks epic rainbow coloured wedding, with heaps of character and lots of handmade touches, we knew we had hit the motherload! Described as “a bit like a quinceañera thrown together by a manic drag queen”, Ryan and Kirk totally nailed every aspect of what Bespoke Bride stands for, actually I think these guys could totally give us a run for our money, when it comes to all things colourful and creative. So before I burst with sheer excitement, feast your eyes on this extravaganza…
“Our wedding was held at the Essex Conference Center in Essex, Massachusetts. We didn’t really have a theme, but we knew we wanted the day to be super colorful, a bit like a quinceañera thrown together by a manic drag queen. We chose or venue as it was so laidback and peaceful. The retreat also houses about 40 people, so we were able to keep many of our friends on site with us the entire weekend. Perhaps most importantly, the retreat had a great space for campfires and the perfect layout for the most epic nerf gun fight of all time!
Perhaps one of our most favourite details of the wedding was the music we played for our processional, we began with Pachelbel’s Canon in D for thirty seconds and then interrupted it with a record scratch and ABBA’s “I do, I do, I do”. Our friend Emily made the most extraordinary Ketubah/Quaker nautical themed wedding contract. She hand drew species from kingdom animalia including a narwhal, beaver, snail, anteater, and dodo bird, among others and we had our attendants and families sign it. We were blown away at its unveiling and now get to enjoy it every day as it hangs on the wall of our living room. Kirk also played the ukulele and sang “Let’s Fall in Love” to me with all of the sweetness of the world.
For favors we turned a construction paper cut-out into tote bags for everyone, which we personalised with a little blue robot family heading toward a crimson rocket ship, destined for some planetary body in the sky. We also added a sparkly cellophane bag of gummy bears on the tables, that waited for the guests at their seats because gummy candy is a must at all time in all situations (and Ryans a gummy bear addict!).
The day before the wedding, Kirk went out with some friends to pick wildflowers. He came home with buckets of purple loosestrife, yellow tansies, and white queen anne’s lace, which we wrapped into little bouquets in twine for the attendants and put bunches in colorful bottles on the tables for the reception decor. Now every summer when those wildflowers bloom we will have a reminder of our wedding day.”
