HERE’S A WEDDING INSPIRED BY THE COUPLE’S FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION
One of the best bits of being in a relationship with someone is all the wonderful memories you make along the way. Some of my most loved memories are those I have made on holidays, so I couldn’t think of a better way to make a wedding more personal than sharing these moments with the guests at your wedding! That’s exactly what this Mexico loving couple did…
“We chose travel as a general theme for the weekend, drawing on some of our favourite holidays to give the day a really personal feel.” Laura told us.
“We wanted a bright colour scheme based around Mexican Papel Picado as we visited Mexico a few years ago and absolutely loved it! My mum is really crafty and went decoration crazy, making our bright table runners by sourcing doilies through Freegle, dying them and sewing them all together. She also made gigantic L & C Pinatas and decorated the tiles that we placed the candles on, whilst I folded all the origami place cards for the tables. “
“We put a lot of time and effort into our ceremony” Laura continued. “It was a really special and emotional part of the day. We had decided early on that we wanted a humanist ceremony to add our own personal touch. Our celebrant Leigh did a fantastic job of telling our story and we chose readings that were pertinent to our feelings for one another.”
“We decided on a Quiach ceremony where both of our fathers poured two different whiskies into the same cup to symbolise the union of our families. As Brian is Scottish, we wanted to give a nod to his heritage and as we met and bonded over whiskey (amongst other things), we thought why not!”
“We booked a New Orleans Jazz band on a whim the week before the wedding. We had watched them playing in a nearby bar and knew they would be perfect. They wandered around the crowd singing to them which really helped to set a fun, laidback tone for the afternoon. For the evening we booked a fantastic band that played a rip-disco and funk set. The musicians were exceptional and we would all stop dancing to stop and marvel at the guitar and sax solos.”
“I had ever really seen me as a white dress sort of girl, so I opted for a beautiful gold/ champagne coloured number with ivory satin overlaid by stunning gold lace on the bodice and tulle on the skirt. It was the perfect compromise between tradition and self expression. To top it off, I wore a simple veil and the gold locket that my granddad gave to my grandma on their wedding day in 1946.”
“Looking back now I wouldn’t have changed a thing, it was all so brilliant! My only advice would be to remember that if something doesn’t quite turn out as you’d imagined it on the day, don’t sweat it – your guests won’t notice, as they are more than likely not familiar with the minutiae of your wedding. I would also say get people involved! The more the merrier, guests love to feel they are playing a playing a part and if your wedding is at an outdoor venue, have two plans: one for good weather and one for bad. We actually planned for three different scenarios, just to be on the safe side.”
