We’re so excited to share Becky & Dan’s casual DIY wedding today. Almost everything, from the incredible moon photo booth to the brides wedding dress was either handmade or upcycled which we think is phenomenal! You are going to freak out at how cool this is!
“We wanted a large open space that was a blank canvas.” Becky began.
“We knew we didn’t want a traditional wedding venue, and though it would have been much easier to use a catered and decorated venue, we didn’t want to be constrained by their menu options or taste,” she explained.
“We wanted to be able to DIY as much of it as humanly possible and have food that we love in a beautiful, personalised, open space. We only visited two venues and stopped when we saw Deepdale. It was exactly what we were looking for, and the hosts seemed to be on board with everything we had in mind.”
“We had a clear vision of what we wanted the vibe to be; fun, brightly coloured, handmade, glittery but most of all informal and relaxed. We didn’t want the same stuffy formal wedding affair, we wanted it to be a bit different. I love Folk music and Dan loves Punk music, it was going to be wonderful mismatch of what makes us us!”
“We didn’t know anyone who’d had a wedding like ours so we looked online – Pinterest (so…many…boards…) and wedding blogs! The only way to get what we wanted was to DIY as much as we could. We made things up as we went along! We only got the food, flowers and chairs from vendors, everything else was borrowed, made or bought from charity shops.”
“We started planning almost as soon as we got engaged and had the venue booked within a couple of months. We used a free wedding planner spreadsheet we found online, and because we had a strict budget (and knew if we weren’t careful, we’d spend wildly!) which was a godsend. From start to finish it was 17 months of planning, gathering and making and we still ran out of time for some of the things we wanted to do.” Becky told us.
“We roped in our parents, brother and sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends to help us get everything ready. My mum made the huge paper flowers, the moon ‘photobooth’, the signs, all the crowns and most of the fancy dress and my gran sewed superhero capes. Everyone was on the lookout for brightly coloured glass and travel games for the tables (which were borrowed from Dan’s mum). I refashioned my wedding dress from one I’d found in Sue Ryder for £26 and sewed blankets and quilts so the haybales wouldn’t be scratchy. For two days before the wedding it was all hands-on deck stapling, swagging and laying the tables.”
“When you’re doing a DIY wedding, it’s really easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have to do everything yourselves and you really don’t. On the day we spent a little too much time organising things and we wish we had spent that time just enjoying it. Make a good itinerary so you don’t forget anything. We’re finding things in cupboards now that we had bought for the wedding and just forgotten because towards the end it gets so hectic. Start planning and making early and be mindful of just how long it takes. Also don’t underestimate the amount of space wedding stuff takes up in your house (and probably other peoples too!) so be prepared to live with it for months before the big day.”

This wedding is really cool because it is far away from the mainstream wedding setups and decorations. Great photo booth and a unique bridal dress. Well done. 🙂
