Travel Gawker: I Want To Go To…Dordogne Valley, France

A couple of week’s ago while eating lunch with my friend Meg, a quaint little place called Dordogne cropped up in conversation. Meg told me stories about her trip there a few years ago and how bakers would deliver fresh croissants to their holiday home in the morning . “HOLD THE PHONE. Did somebody say fresh croissants delivered in the morning?! I need to research this place…”

And so here I am, a few Google searches later, (ok about 5o Google searches later) and a lot of travel reading has led me into a position where I want to tell you all about Dordogne and what I would do if it was myself taking the trip to this gorgeous little place in France!

Les Jardins de Brantome. This charming restaurant is ran by a young husband and wife team and is known for being romantic and providing local cuisine! Described as a ‘warm, friendly and extremely stylish place’, I’m sold already! I wanna eat that yummy food!

Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. A sweet little commune perched on the side of a 100m cliff! It’s clear to see how this medieval jewel became a member of ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ (the most beautiful villages in France). It even has a gothic church built upon a roman chapel and plenty of artists dotted around the streets capturing the magic of the town!

“Reserve Zoologique de Calviac”. A place dedicated to the conservation of endangered species! The animals there look really fascinating and are not from your typical zoo! Like the fossa (above left) and the capybara (Above right), the capybara looks like a giant guinea pig!! (Just googled it and it’s the largest rodent in the world!)

Cave of Font-de-Gaume. The prehistoric drawings look incredible and were pained around 17,000BC! It seems the tour doesn’t involve climbing through any small holes either which is a bonus! I just like the caves that I can have a little walk around in without tempting the fate of my on/off claustrophobia!

I do think it’s quite difficult to reccomend places that you haven’t been to yourself but these were the places that stood out to me in my research! I’d love to hear your stories of Dordogne if you’ve been…
