Travel Gawker: 15 Things I Would Do In New York City
(all photo credits can be found by clicking on the images)
I’ve never been to New York. Can you believe that? I NEED to go to New York, hence why it’s on my list of places to write about in our Travel Gawker feature! But, when I sat down to write this piece on visiting the booming city I planned to set it out like our other travel features; I would talk about where I would want to visit, what I would want to do there and what yummy food I would like to try but as my research got deeper and deeper I soon realised just how near impossible it would be to create this piece! There were just SO MANY places that I wanted to visit in so many different districts that I couldn’t decide on just 3 or 4 places! And that’s exactly why I’m not going to. Grab a cup of tea lovelies, this is going to be one long post while I delve into the magic that makes New York what it is! Here’s my top 15 things I would do if I went to New York City: Scratch that, WHEN I go to New York City… (yes Law Of Attraction). Short disclaimer – I got some help from the guys at offMetro and their wonderful post about romantic things to do in NYC.
(P.S I’ve totally put on Sex And The City while writing this! I’m in the zone!!)
1. Walk The Brooklyn Heights Promenade
Who wouldn’t want to see the Manhattan skyline and a view of the Brooklyn bridge? This stroll/jog/dance down the promenade is only a third of a mile long too! Perfect!
2. Have a fully loaded chocolate experience at Max Brenner ‘Chocolate by the bald man’
We don’t have a ‘Max Brenner’ here in the UK, hence why I want to try the ‘first chocolate burger in the whole universe with strawberry ketchup and vanilla cream mustard’! The chocolate fondue looks pretty amazeballs too! Max says “chocolate, like our body, is burnt by an open flame but soothed by a warm bath”. Warm chocolate sure as hell soothes me! Let’s indulge!
3. Create My Own New York Style Pizza
I seriously love pizza and apparently ‘Pizza a Casa’ will teach you how to make a proper pizza, New York style! Yes please! Somebody sign me up!! Or…sign yourself up here!
4. Watch a Burlesque show!
I’ve always been intrigued by Burlesque shows and what better way to see what it’s all about by actually attending a show?! There’s a huge list of them right here!
5. Hail A Yellow Cab
Ok, so to the everyday New Yorker this would seem like a boringly average thing to do, but hello! We don’t get yellow cabs in the UK! They are way too iconic to not have a ride in!
6. Watch a movie outside
Again, this is a strange concept for us as it literally doesn’t exist in the UK! I think it would be awesome to sit down in the park and watch a film on the big screen! Summer Screen website seems like a great place to start for info!
7. Experience ‘Accomplice’
Have any of you lovely lot done this? It seems like a pretty interesting experience, ‘part game, part theater, part tour’. From what I can make out you’re placed in the position of a detective while ‘Accomplice’ takes it’s audience through the city streets! You’ll be sent on a mission and aided by clues and mysterious cast members! It sounds so unique!
8. See A Magic Show
Yes. I love magic. And yes it is real. I’ve heard alot of people ranting and raving about how amazing Steve Cohen is, he’s the magician to the millionaires and loves to recreate intimate shows in hotel suites with just a small number of chairs! It sounds seriously awesome! You can read more about here!
9. Visit Central Perk
I know, I know, this one is really touristy! BUT Friends is one of my all time favourite programmes and there is no way I would be going to New York and not grabbing a hot beverage in this well renowned cafe! Ok well a fake beverage, cos i’m pretty sure it’s just a set?
10. Wander around the MoMA Museum
The museum of modern art. Yes please! I’m always fascinated by places like this, I could spend hours in them! Plus this one has incredible exhibitions!
11. Lounge around on The High Line
How cool does this place look?! It’s an elevated train track that’s been turned into a long narrow park! It’s also a great place to gawk at the gorgeous city views!
12. Take The Brooklyn Graffiti Tour
There’s a lot to be said about graffiti and apparently Brooklyn is a great place to hear all about it! I’m not talking about the skanky rebellious graffiti either! This is a street art tour. “Street art is graffiti with a college degree” says one of the tour guides! You can read more about this tour here!
13. New York Public Library
Ever since I saw it frozen over in ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ I knew I wanted to go there one day! It looked gorgeous even when it was snowed under! What a beautiful building.
14. See a flash mob!
If I was lucky enough to be involved in one! That’s a hopeful right place and the right time scenario isn’t it!
15. Look out over Central Park from the Met’s rooftop
I would enjoy a nice cold beverage on a warm summers evening of course! Apparently if you go there between May and October Metropolitan Museum Of Art features an exhibit up on the roof! Perfect.
I know I haven’t included your classic tourist places of New York, I wanted to branch out a bit and look behind the scenes of the gorgeous city!
What do you think guys? Where would be your top spots in New York? Tell me, tell me!
Much Bespoke Love
Jessica ♥
Great article! I could only think of a few things I’d like to definitely do if I ever get to visit NYC, but you’ve given me some great ideas! Thanks for sharing!
