Travel Gawker: I Want to go to… Sweden!!
For some time now I have been dying to visit Sweden, my best friend Vicky is Swedish and has recently moved back to Lund to begin her life with her new fiance. I first met Vicky at university where we both studied Animal Biology and Ecology. For years she told me stories of her home country and I have to admit it started to sound magical, so magical I began to wonder if trolls, giants and fairies existed there?
My journey would begin in…
Lund, a small town with a 1000 year old history, making it the second oldest town in Sweden. Medieval houses line the streets and the towns mighty romanesque style cathedral hosts giants in its crypt and a magical clock. (Hold up! Did someone say giants and magical clocks??). Lund is also home to the second largest open air museum demonstrating traditional rural life in Sweden, some houses have doors low enough you could easily mistake them for the homes of hobbits.
Next stop would be…
Stockholm, Sweden’s capital, said to be one of the worlds most beautiful cities, spanning 14 islands and connected by 57 bridges. The city is surrounded by water and green spaces such as the The Royal national park, quoted as being the breath of the city.
I would explore…
Gamla Stan, otherwise known as the old town, with its winding cobbled streets, gothic buildings, antique shops and cafes. The old city is also home to the kings castle, the biggest castle in the world and is still used by the king today.
I would love to see…
The Northern Lights. This would mean travelling to Lapland but this phenomenon is on many a bucket list and it would be foolish to travel all the way to Sweden and miss it. The best chances of catching the northern lights would be on a cold winters night usually late march or early spring. One of the prime locations for catching the lights is Abisko National park, where there is a chair lift to take you up to the aurora sky tower, overlooking the park.
I would love to experience…
The call of the wild with a dog sledding adventure. Siberian huskies are beautiful, strong and dependable animals, with a love of sledding. I would love to see the excitement in their eyes and feel the thrill of sledding through the deep forests and wide mountain planes.Imagine cooking lunch over an open fire and snuggling in the warmth of a log cabin in the evenings.
So has anyone visited Sweden, or been on a dog sledding adventure? I would love to hear from you?
Much Bespoke Love
Emily ♥

Hi Emily, – great post!!! I’d love to go to Sweeden too!!!! I’d absolutely love to see the northern lights… one day x
Hi Jessica it is such a magical place, I do really hope to be going out at the end of the year so I will be sure to share my journey 🙂
Hi Emily,
I know this is an old post but I just ran across it.
Hope you did visit Sweden – I was in Stockholm earlier this year and yes, it is a great place to visit.
If you still haven’t gone there, may I add that you should include the subway system as one of your itinerary items.
The underground has art installations in the majority of their stations and they are eye-catching.
I did a write-up and photo series on it so you can check it out there.
Hi Ken
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply to me! I did indeed visit Sweden and we had the most fantastic time and the Subway system was one of the things on my list! One of my favourites was a giant teddy bear installation! I wonder if you have seen it? I will be sure to check your photo series too! We will be heading to Copenhagen again in December so I am looking forward to my next trip now 🙂
Thanks again!
Emily x
Hey Emily,
Giant teddy bear installation?? Never ran across that one – dang, girlfriend would’ve love to see that one.
Copenhagen – another lovely city! I have so much to write about Copenhagen too, but as I’ve only just started writing that one may have to wait. However, I did write one article on something in Copenhagen. Like most people, I’m quite sure you will visit the Stroget for some sight-seeing and shopping. In that case, I recommend visiting the Church of Our Lady – only about a minute off the Stroget. It’s surprisingly beautiful in it’s simplicity. Check it out in December and let me know what you think.
