Inside The Mind of A Stylist: Nicholas Parnell
When I heard that my friend Nicholas Parnell was getting into styling, I couldn’t have been more excited! In the many years that I’ve known him it’s clear that he’s always had a great eye for fashion, style and creating a look that stands out from the crowd which is exactly what we’re about here at Bespoke Bride! Nicholas wants all the brides out there to know that your dream wedding, whatever it may be, is possible and with the help of a stylist these ideas can become a reality! We quizzed him to find out how he works and where he gets his inspiration from plus we’ve even nabbed a styled shoot by Nick! Listen up ladies and gents because this is one hot stylist you don’t want to miss…
Ok Nick, let’s start from the beginning, how did you get into wedding styling?
My Sister Julia Parnell! She is a fabulous TV producer in New Zealand and got married back in March where she had a fabulous out door ceremony looking over the water. For her wedding she had a 4 post bamboo structure built which I dressed in white cotton and yellow ribbons. She wore an amazing lace dress by designer Nicole Miller and it was the perfect summer wedding! I enjoyed being involved in her wedding so much that it inspired me to use my styling skills and open up my business to brides.
How would you describe your style?
I experiment with clothes, I will try different things and I am not scared to push the boat out. I understand a lot of people are not willing to wear chunky chains & gold shoes but my personal style does not reflect my working style. I take my experimental approach and use it to encourage others to try new things. Those new things may not be eccentric just small touches like a new colour or a new fit. With brides I believe they need to be realistic about what they can achieve & they need to never forget it is their day and they need to make the most of it! If that means pushing the boat out for one day… so be it!
What makes your styling unique?
I have a wide spectrum of style, I am not a one trick pony! What makes me as a stylist unique is that I aim to make my clients unique. There are 100’s of weddings per day and most women are buying the same gowns and using the same themes… do you want to be another one of these women? No of course you don’t! You want to have the wedding that people remember! To achieve this you need to have that edge, the je ne sais quoi!
Why should a couple choose you to be their wedding stylist?
At first glance some may think a wedding stylist is over the top but the real factor is if I come into your wedding as a stylist I bring a fresh eye and an honest mind. It’s easy to spend money in a wedding, it seems to disappear into thin air and some couples I know wonder where it has all gone after the wedding has wrapped! Using a stylist you gain access into a new level of wedding contacts, special expert advice & someone to confide wedding worries in BUT most of all you have someone to take your dream and turn it into a reality.
Where do you take inspiration from?
I take inspiration from my day to day life. Its the small things in the world that can be the most beautiful. When styling a wedding the first and most crucial point is to understand the couples personal style and how that reflects on their special day.
How long have you been interested in styling?
I have been working in fashion for the last 5 years. I started off working with America’s Next Top Model and then working with two celebrity stylists Derek Warburton & June Ambrose in New York. I also worked with the luxury bridal designer Randi Rahm who created flawless gowns for the socialites, super wealthy & famous!
Working with a bridal designer has helped me understand the technical aspects to some gowns & I can see now the difference between a lux gown and a more basic one.
Who do you look up to in the industry?
I have always looked up to Anna Del Russo who is just plain fabulous.
What’s your favourite thing about weddings?
The Bride. When the bride makes her first ever appearance in front of the crowd its the moment that takes your breath away! That is what it is all about for me, seeing the glimmer in the grooms eye when he realises he has bagged the hottest girl in town!
Do you have a ‘favourite’ theme or style for weddings?
No I am open to all themes..
What trends do you see for 2013 in terms of styling?
I think spring/summer 2013 is going to see metallic’s & pastels, bright colours & monochromes. For brides I see bold bright colours, ruffled wedding cakes, lots of lace, more eclectic non traditional venues & themed weddings like flapper & Victorian.
What have you got coming up in the future?
I am very excited about the future! I recently competed in a reality show called “Style Wars” produced by Fashion One TV , it is due to air worldwide in June this year. Like my new Facebook pageto keep up to date with the show and my movements!
