Wedding DIY: How To Make Your Own Wedding Car Cans!
Looking to make your own DIY Wedding Car Cans? You’ve reached the right place, and in this post, park of the Bespoke Bride DIY section – you’ll easily learn how to do this!
Is this even legal anymore? I’m not sure but I know I haven’t seen it done for quite a while! It seems that one of the more traditional things of a wedding is now an unusual thing to do! But where did it all start? I did a quick Google search and I got a couple of answers! The 1st being that the tradition is from the Middle ages, the noise was apparently used to warn off evil spirits from kidnapping the bride! The 2nd being to get people’s attention to show off that you’re married and proud! I’m not sure which is true but either way I think these look really cute! If you want to know how to make your own then just read on…
You will need:
♥ Empty tins ♥ Scrapbook paper ♥ String ♥ Glue ♥ Sharpie
♥ Screw Driver ♥ Mallet/Hammer
Step 1: Remove the labels from your can and give them a good ol’ scrub!
Step 2: Measure the size of the can against your scrapbook paper and cut it down to fit!
Step 3: Glue the scrapbook paper to the can.
Step 4: Do the same for all of your other cans.
Step 5: Now come’s the fun part! Grab your sharpie and get creative!
Step 6: Repeat on all cans!
Step 7: Take your screw driver and hammer then knock the screwdriver through the can. This is definitely easier if somebody holds the can for you! (I learnt that the hard way!)
Step 8: Pull the string through the holes and knot in place.
Step 9: Tie the string on all of the other cans then fasten tightly in place on the back of the car!
Job done!
Over and out beauts!
Why We Love Wedding Car Cans
There’s something timeless and charming about a car pulling away with a string of clinking cans trailing behind. It’s a scene straight out of a classic rom-com, and let’s face it, who doesn’t love a bit of movie magic in real life?
First off, let’s talk about the sound. The clattering of cans on asphalt is like a celebratory symphony, announcing to the world that two people just vowed to spend their lives together. It’s the perfect blend of playful and triumphant. When my cousin drove off with a symphony of cans clinking behind his car, it felt like the whole town was cheering them on.
Now, beyond the delightful noise, wedding car cans bring a touch of nostalgia. They harken back to simpler times when weddings weren’t just Instagrammable moments but heartfelt celebrations. My parents still reminisce about their wedding day, particularly the joy of hearing those cans rattle as they sped off into their future.
Adding cans to your wedding car is also wonderfully budget-friendly. No need to spend a fortune on lavish decorations when a few recycled cans and some string can create such a memorable effect. Plus, it’s an eco-friendly way to upcycle, adding a touch of green to your big day. You can even get creative—decorate the cans with paint, stickers, or ribbons to match your wedding theme.
However, there are a few practicalities to consider. For one, make sure the cans are securely fastened. You wouldn’t want them to fly off and create a mini obstacle course on the road. And be prepared for a bit of cleanup afterward. But really, what’s a little post-celebration mess compared to the joy and laughter those cans bring? Check out Events By Beau for more creative celebration ideas.
Wedding car cans also symbolize the journey ahead. They signify leaving behind the single life and embarking on a new adventure together. The clinking cans remind us that marriage, like the road ahead, may have its bumps, but it’s the shared experiences that make the journey beautiful. It’s a wonderful metaphor that resonates deeply with anyone who’s ever been in love.
In essence, wedding car cans are a small, whimsical touch that adds a big impact. They’re a fun, affordable, and meaningful way to celebrate your union. So, as you plan your big day, consider this charming tradition. It’s a simple gesture that promises to leave you with fond memories and a few great stories to tell.

A power drill would be way easier that hammering a screwdriver through the can. Then you would be able to hold the can yourself as well.
Nice post. Any interest in doing a reboot with Hang Kap (www.hangkap.com)? This is a product that snaps onto the lip of a can, and you can feed string through its holes to create a display, or in this case, wedding car cans!
