Home DIY: How To Make A Sewn Route Map!
Happy Tuesday you lovely lot! I’m not sure if I mentioned it (lol!) but I’m currently in Canada!! For this week’s DIY I wanted to create something that would make a constant memory of this amazing trip (photos aside!) Me and James are doing a lot of travelling around this country since I’m lucky enough to have family dotted all over the place plus a very goof friend that lives in Montreal and this framed map is such a cute way to display all of the places we visited! (To be fair, these maps are definitely better after a trip is done just in case you ended up somewhere spontaneous and amazing but you could always sew in an extra route after!) This would also make a great gift for somebody who has just done a lot of travelling!
Ready to get started? Let’s do this!
You will need:
♥ A Map (I printed mine from Google Maps) ♥ A frame ♥ Some red cotton ♥ A needle ♥ Scrabble & scrapbook letters (optional)
Step 1: Pierce holes all the way along where you’re going to sew so you know exactly where you’re going with that needle!
Step 2: Thread the cotton through the needle (kudos for doing that first time!) and start to sew into your map using a ‘back stitch’. You do this by threading the needle from the back of the map through the second hole in the route, then inserting the needle into the first hole, and pulling it back out the third. (it sounds confusing but I promise you it’s easy! Believe me, I’m not at all good with a needle and thread!) Then continue along route.
Step 3: Keep going! Stop if you thread is getting to tangled or anything, I had to do this a few times so I just cut off the thread and taped it to the back of the map then started a new thread where I was last!
Step 4: Once you’ve finished sewing your route, pop your map in the frame! You can stop here if you like because I think it looks quite cute as it is but I wanted to jazz it up a little with some scrabble & scrapbook letters!
Step 5: Glue the letters to the outside of the frame. I only had to do this because the scrabble letters were so thick that there was no way the back was getting on the frame! I think it looks pretty cool like that though, it gives it a 3D element!
Step 6: Display somewhere pretty!

This is a great idea and I love that my home state, Vermont, is shown in your photo series. That route looks like one I’d like to take sometime soon.
